第13章 前置詞

前置詞は名詞や代名詞の前に置く語です。つまり、名詞や代名詞などを従えて、副詞句や形容詞句などの句になります。この章では、よく用いられる前置詞の重要な用法を学びます。

13-1. 前置詞の用法

前置詞は、名詞およびそれに相当する語句(代名詞・動名詞など)と結びついて前置詞句となり、副詞句や形容詞句をつくる。前置詞のあとに置かれる名詞・名詞相当語句を前置詞の目的語といいます。

13-1-1. 前置詞句の働き

13-1-1-1. 副詞句として

Father is now working in the garden.<動詞を修飾>(父は今庭で働いています)
The glass is full of water.<形容詞を修飾>(コップは水でいっぱいだ)
He lives far away from home.<副詞を修飾>(彼は故郷を遠く離れて暮らしている)

13-1-1-2. 形容詞句として

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.<限定用法>(手の中の1羽はやぶの中の2羽の価値がある—明日の100より今日の50(諺))
名詞を修飾する前置詞句は、名詞のあとに置かれます。
This book is of great use.<叙述用法、主格補語>(この本はとても有益です)
I thought it of no importance.<叙述用法、目的格補語>(私はそれは重要ではないと思った)

13-1-2. 前置詞の目的語

前置詞の目的語となるものは、名詞・代名詞のほか、名詞の働きをする語句です。

前置詞 + 名詞 I feel at home in this place.(この場所にいると私は寛げる)
前置詞 + 代名詞 I borrowed the money from him.(その金は彼から借りました)
前置詞 + 動名詞 He insisted on going there alone.(彼はそこへ1人で行くと主張した)
前置詞 + 節 Success depends on whether or not you will do your best.(君が最善を尽くすかどうかに成功がかかっている)

その他の前置詞の目的語

① 形容詞 The baby was given up for dead.(その赤ん坊は死んだものと諦められた)

慣用句になっているものが多い。for cetrtain (確かに), in short (要するに)など。
② 副詞 This road has been under construction until recently.(この道路は最近まで工事中であった)

慣用句になっているものが多い。for ever (永久に), by far (たいへん、はるかに), from abroad (海外から)など。
③ 不定詞 The doctor is about to leave the hospital.(その医者は病院を去ろうとしている)<to不定詞>

I would do anything for her except eat what she cooks.(彼女が料理したものを食べること以外なら彼女のため何でもする—どんなにしても彼女の料理は食べられない)<原形不定詞>

She did nothing but cry all day long.<原形不定詞>(彼女は1日中泣いてばかりいた)

不定詞を目的語にするbe about to, nothing but+原形不定詞のようなもの、慣用表現として覚える。
④ 句 The old man looked at me from above his glasses.(その老人はメガネ越しに私を見た)

from aboveを二重前置詞と考えてよい。

13-1-3. 前置詞の位置

前に述べたように、前置詞は原則として名詞、代名詞などの前に置かれますが、次のような場合には目的語と離れて置かれます。

13-1-3-1. 疑問詞が前置詞の目的語の時

What are you looking for?(あなたは何をさがしているのですか)

13-1-3-2. 関係代名詞が前置詞の目的語の時

This is the house (which) we live in.(これが私達の住んでいる家です)

13-1-3-3. 不定詞に伴う時

Lend me something to write with.(何か書く物を貸してください)

13-1-3-4. 「動詞+前置詞」の動詞句が受動態になる時

He was laughed at by everybody.(彼は皆に笑われた)

13-1-3-5. 「前置詞+語(句)」と「接続詞+S+V」

同一の語(句)がきて、接続詞のあとにはS+Vの形がくることで、前置詞か接続詞かを区別できます。

He ran before me.(彼は私の前を走った)<前置詞>
He had ran a mile before he came to the hospital.(彼は1マイル走ってその病院へやってきた)<接続詞>

13-2. 場所・方向を表す前置詞

13-2-1. at 地点あるいは比較的狭い場所; in 広い範囲の場所

at the door(戸口に)、at the party(パーティーで)
at home(家で)
in Japan(日本に)、in the worls(世界に)
in the east(東に)
He met me at the station.(彼は私を駅で出迎えした)
I was born in Tokyo.(私は東京で生まれました)

狭い場所でも「〜の中」を表す場合はin。in the bus(バスの中で), in the hotel(ホテルの中で)など。

13-2-2. in 「〜の中に(で)」; into 「〜の中へ」(ある場所の中への移動); out of 「〜の外で、〜の中から」inとintoの反意語

The children are playing in the yard.(子供達は庭で遊んでいます)
Put the cake into the oven now.(さあケーキを天火(てんぴ)に入れなさい)

口語ではintoのかわりにinを使う。Put the cake in the oven now.
He took a wallet out of his pocket.(彼はポケットから札入れを取り出した)

13-2-3. on「〜の上に」(接触して)⇔under「〜の下に」, above「〜の上方に」(離れて)⇔below「〜の下方に」, over「〜の真上に」(空間を置いて)⇔under「〜の真下に」, up「〜の上方に」(運動)⇔down「〜の下方に」

beneathは文語的な語で、under, belowの両方の意味を持ちます。「身分」「価値」などが低い時によく使われます。I am beneath him in intelligence.(私は理解力の点で彼に劣る)

a vase on the table(テーブルの上の花瓶)

the ground under grass(草に覆われた土地)
The moon rose above the hill(月が丘の上に出た)

The sun has sunk below the horizon(太陽が地平線の下に沈んだ)
a bridge over the river(川に架かっている橋)

a bench under a tree(木の下のベンチ)
climb up a tree(木によじ登る)

run down the hill(丘を駆け下りる)

① overは「〜中に」とか「〜を越えて」の意味にも使われます。all over the world(世界中に), over the mountain(山の向こうに)
② 「〜の向こうに」にbeyondを使うことがあります。beyond the river(川の向こうに)。また、beyondには「(程度を)越えて」の意味がある。live beyond his income(収入以上の生活をする)

13-2-4. onは「上」とは限らない

onは「接触」を示す語で、接触していれば横(壁の場合)でも下(天井の場合)でもよいです。pictures on the wall(壁にかかっている絵), a fly on the ceiling(天井にいるハエ), また、「上」でも離れて真上ならover, 漠然と上の方ならaboveを使う。London is on the Thames.(ロンドンはテムズ川のほとり)。

13-2-5. by「〜のそばに(を)」, beside「〜のそばに」「〜と並んで」

He passed by me.(彼は私のそばを通り過ぎた)
he sat beside me.(彼は私のそばに座った)

besideとbesidesの違いに注意。besides:「〜に加えて、〜のほかに」、否定文では「〜を除いて」

I have another handbag besides this.(このほかに別のハンドバッグを持っている)
He had nothing besides an empty wallet.(彼はからっぽの財布意外何も持っていなかった)

13-2-5. before「〜の前に」, behind「〜の後ろに」, after「〜を追って」

He stood before the teacher.(彼はその先生の前に立った)
She hid herself behind the curtain.(彼女はカーテンの後ろに隠れた)
The man ran after his partner.(その男は彼の連れのあとを追いかけた)

13-2-6. to「〜へ」(到着点を表す), for「〜の方向へ」(start, leaveなどの動詞とともに用いて方向を表す), toward(s)「〜の方へ」(運動中の方向を表す)

She went to England.(彼女は英国へ行った)
He left for Germany.(彼はドイツへ向けて出発した)
We are walking toward(s) the gate.(我々は門の方に向かって歩いている)

towardはアメリカで主に使われ、それにsが付いたtowardsはイギリスで主に使われます。

13-2-7. between 2つのものの「間」, among 3つのものの「間」

The city lies between Nagoya and Osaka.(その市は名古屋と大阪の間にある)
Divide these cakes among you three.(あなたたち3人でこれらのケーキを分けなさい)

ただし、betweenを3つ以上のものの間に使うこともありますが、それは2つずつ分離してその間の関係を示すような場合です。a treaty between three powers.(3大国間の条約)

13-2-8. of 分離, off 「〜から離れて」, from 動作の起点

It is ten miles north of the city.(市の北方10マイルにある)
The plane was off the ground.(飛行機は離陸した)
We flew from London to Tokyo.(我々はロンドンから東京へ飛んだ)

13-2-9. along「〜に沿って」, across「〜を横切って」, through「〜を通り抜けて」

We walked along the river.(我々は川に沿って歩いて行った)
Nobody could swim across the river.(誰も川を泳いで渡れなかった)
we must go through the tunnel.(そのトンネルを通り抜けなければならない)

alongはいつも「〜に沿って」という訳が当たるわけではなく、come, go, move, walk, bringなどにそえて、口調を整えるために用いられることが多いです。He came along.(彼がやってきた)

「鏡を通して」?

He threw a ball through the mirror.という文は、どう考えたらよいでしょうか。「彼はその鏡を通してボールを投げた」などと訳してはいけません。「彼はボールをぶつけて鏡を割った」となります。

13-2-10. around「〜のまわりに」, round「〜のまわりを」, about「〜のまわりに、〜のあたりに」(漠然と周囲)

There are many trees around the building.(その建物のまわりには木が多い)
The earth moves round [around] the sun.(地球は太陽のまわりを回っている)
Bees buzzed about my head.(蜂が私の頭のまわりをブンブン飛んだ)

aroundとroundの区別は厳密なものではありません。なお、米語ではaroundが、イギリス英語ではroundが好まれる傾向があります。

13-3. 時を表す前置詞

13-3-1. at 時刻やきわめて短い時間; on 特定の日や時; in 月、季節、年など比較的長い時間・期間

at three(3時に), at noon(正午に), at night(夜に), at the beginning of March(3月の上旬に), at the age of ten(10才の時に)

on Sunday(日曜に), on the fifth of May(5月5日に), on the morning of July 4(7月4日の朝に), on New Year’s Day(元日に), in June(6月に), in summer(夏に), in the 20th century(20世紀に)

in Monday morningかon Monday morningか

morning, afternoon, evening, nightなどに修飾語が付いているときには、inやatではなく、onを使うことに注意。

in the morning→on Monday morning

at night→on a starry night(星の夜に)

また、this morningやlast nightのようにthis, that, next, everyなどが時を表す語句の前に付く場合には前置詞は不要であるので、in this morningなどとしない

13-3-2. by「〜までに」(「動作・状態」の完了の期限), till [until]「〜まで(ずっと)」(「動作・状態」の継続)

Come back by noon.(正午までに帰ってきなさい)
Wait here till noon.(正午までここで待て)

① byの次に節がくる場合にはby the time (that) 〜を使います。We must complete this task by the time he arrives.(我々は彼が到着する前にこの仕事を仕上げなければならない)
tillは文中だけ、untilは文頭または文中で用います

13-3-3. in「〜たったら」(ふつう現在を起点として時の経過)、after「〜後」(過去や未来を起点として時の経過), within「〜以内に」(一定の期間内)

He will come back in a few days.(2, 3日経ったら帰ってくるでしょう)
He came back after three years’ absence.(彼は3年ぶりに帰ってきた)
You must solve this problem within an hour.(あなたは1時間以内にこの問題を解かなくてはならない)

13-3-4. for「〜の間」(ふつう一定の期間を表す語句とともに), during「〜の間中」(特定の期間の状態を示す語 → the vacation, stay, the seasonなどとともに), through「〜の間中」(ある期間の初めから終わりまでの継続)

I stayed here (for) ten years.(私はそこに10日間滞在した)
期間を表すforはしばしば省略されます。
He fell ill during the vacation.(その休暇中に彼は病気になった)
I was ill for a week and during that week I ate nothing.(私は1週間病気して、その週の間すっと何も食べなかった)
He kept awake through the night.(彼は1晩中目を覚ましていた)

13-3-5. from「〜から」(単に時間の出発点), since「〜からずっと」(過去のある時から現在までの「継続」。現在完了とともに使うことが多いです)

I wited from three to five.(3時から5時まで待った)

fromは上例のようにfrom A to [till] B(AからBまで)の形で使われることが多い。
We read books there from morniing till night.(我々はそこで朝から晩まで読書をした)
I have been waiting since three O’clock.(私は3時からずっと待っているのです)

13-3-6. above「〜ごろ」, around「〜ごろ」(米語でよく使われる), toward(s)「〜ごろ(になって)」(期間の接近)

It begins about [around] seven.(7時頃始まる)
He came back toward(s) morning.(彼は朝方近くになって帰ってきた)

13-4. その他の前置詞

13-4-1. 原因・理由を表すもの

I was surprised at the news.(その知らせを聞いて驚いた)<感情の原因>
Osaka is famous for its saba-zushi.(大阪はサバ寿司で有名だ)<名声・賞罰・感情などの原因>
He died from working too hard.(彼は過労がもとで死んだ)<間接的な原因>
She died of pneumonia.(彼女は肺炎で亡くなった)<直接的な原因>
She is proud of her son.(彼女は息子を誇りにしている)<感情の原因>
They were trebmbled with anger.(怒り(のため)に身を震わせた)<理由>
He was dismissed through neglect of duty.(彼は職務怠慢のため解雇された)<原因・動機>

13-4-2. 目的・目標を表すもの

He is always seeking after fame.(彼はいつも名声を求めている)<追求>
Is there a home for rent around here?(この辺に貸し家はありませんか)<利益・恩恵>
Father went India on business.(父は商用でインドに行きました)<用向き>
He threw a stone at the dog.(彼はその犬めがけて石を投げた)<目標>

atの有無による次の2文の違いに注意しましょう。

He shot a rabbit.(ウサギを撃って仕留めた)

He shot at a rabbit.(彼はウサギを狙って撃った—仕留めたかどうかは不明

catch (つかむ), catch at〜 (つかもうとする)なども同類。「溺れる者は藁をもつかむ」はA drowning man will catch at a straw.のようにatが入ることで摑もうとすることがわかります(掴むことができたかどうかは不明)。

13-4-3. 結果を表すもの

A lot of horses were burnt to ashes in the fire.<結果>(その火事で多くの家が焼失した)
The rain changed into snow toward evening.<変化の結果>(夕方近くになって雨が雪に変わった)
I’ve got a word or two

13-4-4. 材料を表すもの

材料が変化しない場合はof, 材料が変化する場合はfrom。

Most Japanese house are made of wood.<材料>(ほとんどの日本の家屋は木造です)
Wine is made from grapes.<原料>(ブドウ酒はブドウからつくられる)

Grapes are made into wine.(ブドウはブドウ酒になる)

13-4-5. 行為者・手段を表すもの

I went to Hawaii by ship.(私は船でハワイに行きました)<手段>
He was killed by his enemy with a sword.(彼は敵に剣で殺された)<行為者・道具>

① 「英語で」はin English

「インクで」はin ink

③ 「ペンで」はwith a pen

④ 「(道具・手段)をなしに」はwithout〜。

13-4-6. 程度・度合いを表すもの

He is taller than I by three inches.<〜だけ>(彼は私より3インチだけ背が高い)
The automobile was running at full speed.<割合>(その車は全速力で走っていた)

13-4-7. 関連・関係を表すもの

I have often heard of you.<人や物>(あなたのおうわさはかねがねうかがっております)
Please tell me about that.<詳しい事情>(どうかそれについて教えてください)
He is an authority on economics.<主題>(彼は経済学の権威です)
I have nothing to do with the affair.<関係>(彼はその事件とは何の関係もありません)

13-4-8. 比較・対照を表すもの

Life is often compared to a voyage.<たとえ>(人生はしばしば航海に例えられる)
Try to compare Tokyo with other large cirties.<比較>(東京を他の大都市と比べてみてください)
While clouds looked beautiful against the blue sky.<対照>(青空を背景にして白い雲が美しく見えた)

13-4-9. 所属・部分・修飾を表すもの

the garden of the house(その家の庭)<所属>
one of my records(私のレコードの中の1枚)<部分>
a man of ability(有能な人)(= an able man)<修飾>

13-4-10. 着用を表すもの

a man in a wig(かつらをかぶった人)
a girl in red shoes(赤い靴をはいた少女)
She is dressed in black(彼女は喪服を着ている)


ビートルズの曲「Baby’s In Black」では、She dresses in black.とShe’s dressed in black.の2通りが出て来ます。

13-4-11. 様態・状態を表すもの

She solved the problem with ease.(= easily)(彼女はその問題を容易に解決した)
He looked at me in surprise.(彼はびっくりして私を見た)

13-4-12. 付帯状況を表すもの

He stood with a pipe in his mouth.(彼はパイプをくわえて立っていた)
She slept with the window open.(彼女は窓を開けたまま眠った)

13-4-13. 賛成・反対を表すもの

I am for [against] the plan.(私はその計画に賛成[反対]です)

13-4-14. 単位・代価を表すもの

Gasoline is sold by the liter in Japan.(日本ではガソリンはℓ単位で売られています)
I paid ten dollars for the dictionary.(その辞書の代価として10ドル支払った)

13-4-15. 除外を表すもの

They were all there except me.(私の他はみんなそこにいた)
They lived nextdoor but one.(彼らは一軒置いた隣りに住んでいた)

13-4-16. exceptとexcept for

次の例文に両者の違いが表されている。

The lines are all short except one.(一本以外は直線はみな短い)(⇦たくさんの中の1本のイメージ)
The line is straight except for one end.(その線分は片方の端を除けば真直ぐだ)(⇦1本の中のある一部分のイメージ)

ビートルズのホワイトアルバムに入っている曲の歌詞にexcept forが含まれているものがあります。しかし、曲のタイトルにはforがなくてexceptだけです。

13-5. 句前置詞

次のように、2つ以上の語が結びついて1つの前置詞の働きをするものを句前置詞または群前置詞という。

13-5-1. 場所 in front of〜「〜の前に」(特に建物の前に)
away from〜「〜から離れて、〜に近寄らない」

The car stopped in front of the building.(車はその建物の前に止まった)
He stood away from the house.(彼はその家から離れて立っていた)

13-5-2. 原因・理由 because of〜「〜のために」, on account of〜「〜のために」, owing to〜「〜のために」

Because of the typhoon, he could not go there.(台風の為に、彼はそこへ行くことができなかった)
The excuesion was put off on account of the rain.(雨のため遠足は延期された)
Owing to a heavy snowfall the bus could not depart at 8:30.(大雪のため、バスは8時30分に出発できなかった)

米口語ではdue toも用いられる。Vegetable prices are rising due to the dry spell.(日照り焼きのために野菜の値段が高騰している)

13-5-3. 目的 for the purpose of〜「〜の目的で、〜のために」, for the sake of〜「〜の(利益の)ために」, with a wiew to「〜の目的で、〜のため」

He will go to France for the purpose of the study of science.(彼は科学の勉強のためフランスへ行きます)
She worked hard for the sake of money.(彼女はお金(儲け)のために一生懸命働いた)
He learned English very hard with a wiew to becoming a teacher.(彼は教師になる目的で英語を熱心に学んだ)

13-5-4. 結果 in (the) consequence of 「〜の故に、〜の結果として」

The matter was settled in (the) consequence of his confession.(その事件は彼の自白の結果解決した)

13-5-5. 関係 with regard [respect] to「〜に関しては」, as for [to]「〜に関する限り、〜に関しては」

She agreed with him with regard to this project.(彼女はこの計画に関しては彼に賛成した)
As fo rme, I am against the project.(私に関する限り、その計画には反対です)

13-5-6. その他

Most thoughts are expressed by means of words.<手段>(ほとんどの思想は言葉によって表現される)
We went to San Francisco by way of Hawaii.<経由>(私達はハワイ経由でサンフランシスコへ行った)
In (the) case of rain, the game will be postponed.<条件>(雨の場合には、その試合は延期されるだろう)
We are going to climb Mt. Fuji in spite of her opposition.<譲歩>(我々は彼女の反対にもかかわらず富士山に登るつもりです)
主として時事的米語でdespiteが多用される。
For all you say, I like him.<譲歩>(あなたが何と言おうと、私は彼が好きだ)
With all his talent, he was not proud.(彼には才能があるにもかかわらず、得意にならなかった)
Give me cash instead of a check.<交換>( 小切手の代わりに現金をください)
I bought a magazine in place of a dictionary.<交換>(辞書の代わりに雑誌を買った)
In addition to being a sportsman, he is a musucian.<追加>(彼はスポーツマンであるばかりでなく、音楽家でもある)
According to the weather forecast, it will clear up this afternoon.<準拠>(天気予報によれば、午後は晴れるそうだ)
Thanks to his help, we could accomplish our purpose.<準拠>(彼の助力のおかげで我々の目的を達成することができた)
Your speech was very good except for a few mistakes in pronunciation.(あなたの演説は発音が数カ所間違っていたほかは大変良かったよ)

13-5-7. 二重前置詞

前置詞が2つ続くものを二重前置詞と呼ぶことがあります。これは、先に触れたように、前置詞が句を目的語にとる形です。

Tom addressed me from across the street.(トムは通りの向こう側から話しかけた)
A bird dropped out from among the leaves.(1羽の鳥が木の葉の間からひょいと現れた)
We talked till after eleven o’clock.(私達は11時過ぎまで話した)

13-5-8. 誤りやすい前置詞の語法

1 「の」=ofとは限らない

「きのう英語の試験があった」

(誤)We had an examination of English yesterday.

(正)We had an examination in English yesterday.

「ヘミングウェイの小説」a novel by Hemingway

「料理の本」a book on cooking

「顔の傷跡」a scar on the face
2 つい忘れがちな文尾にくる前置詞

「私には住むべき家がない」

(誤)I have no house to live.

(正)I have no house to live in.

「相談すべき友人」a friend to talk with

「すわる椅子」a chair to sit on

「食物を買うお金」money to buy food with
3 「から」=fromとは限らない

「学校は4月1日から始まる」

(誤)School begins from April 1.

(正)School begins on April 1.

同様に、School begins at eight o’clock (in April).にも注意。
4 日本語と対応しない英語の前置詞

「私は英国へ本を注文した」

(誤)I ordered books to England.

(正)I ordered books from England.

「英国へ」は英語では「英国から取り寄せる」方に重きを置いてorder〜from…とする。

「腕をつかまえる」catch a person by the arm

「頭をたたく」hit a person on the head

「〜から独立している」be independent of〜

「この理由によって」for the reason

「駅から歩いて10分以内」within ten minutes’ walk of the station

「海へ釣りに行く」go fishing in the sea
