第27章 無生物主語を含む英文

英語では一部の動詞以外は「生物」でも「無生物」でも主語にすることが多いです。この章では、このような英語の特徴的な表現である無生物主語について、そのような主語をとりやすい動詞を中心に取り扱います。

27-1. make, enable, cause, compel, force, oblige「(無理矢理に)〜させる, 〜の原因となる」

「使役・起因・強制」などを示す上のような動詞は、無生物主語をとりやすい傾向があります。

1 The news made her happy.(その知らせで彼女はうれしくなった)
2 Experience enabled him to earn more money.(彼は経験を積んだので、もっと多くの収入が得られるようになった)
3 The noise caused her to start.(その音で彼女はぎくっとした)
4 The coming exam compelled the lazy boys to work hard.(試験が近いので怠け者達は懸命に勉強せざるを得なかった)
5 The pain drove him mad.(痛みで彼は気が狂いそうであった)
6 Straitened circumstances obliged him to this crime.(貧困のために彼はこの罪を犯した)<固い文語>

上の文は直訳ではそれぞれ「幸せにした」、「可能にした」、「(ぎくっとする)原因になった」、「(無理に)駆り立てて(狂気に)させた」、「貧困が余儀なく〜させた」などとなりますが、やや不自然な日本語になります。

27-2. allow, permit「許す」

1 Occasional gaps allow passage through the mountains.(所々に峠道があるおかげで山を越すことができる)
2 The law does not permit the sale of such drugs.(そのような薬物の販売は法により許可されていた)

27-3. cost, take「(費用・時間・手間が)かかる」

1 How much will it cost to send this letter by air mail?(この手紙は航空便でいくらかかりますか)
2 The work took me three hours.= It took me three hours to do the work.(その仕事をするのに3時間を要した)

27-4. bring, take, lead「連れて来る(行く)」

1 What on earth has brought you here?= What did you come here for?(あなたは一体何しにここに来たのか?)
2 Five minutes’ walk brought us to the lake.= When we had walked 5 minutes, we came to the lake.(私達は5分歩くと湖に着いた)
3 This street will take you to the theater.= If you go along the street, you will be able to get to the theater.(この通りを抜ければ劇場へ行けます)
4 The fact led me to think that he was a liar.(その事実から、私は彼が嘘つきだと考えるようになった)

27-5. prevent, keep「妨げる、抑止する」

1 A heavy snow kept [prevented] them from going to the market.= Because of a heavy snow, they could not go to the market.(大雪のため彼らは市場に行けなかった)
2 Still the continuing snow prevented the helicopters from taking off.(降りしきる雪の為に、ヘリコプターは離陸できなかった)

27-6. keep, leave「(ある状態に)しておく」

1 The noise kept me awake all night.(騒がしくて一晩中眠れなかった)
2 The news left him uneasy.(彼はその知らせを聞いて不安になった)

27-7. disclose, reveal, say, show「示す、明らかにする」

1 The thermometers says 5 degrees below zero.(温度計では−5℃だ)
The thermometers reads 5 degrees below zero.ともいう。
2 Biology reveals the harmony of nature.(生物学で、今までわからなかった自然の調和が明らかになった)
3 A close study showed that the crops would be scanty this fall.(詳細に調査した結果、今秋の収穫は悪い見込みであることが判明した)

27-8. remind, suggest「〜を想起させる、連想させる」

1 This reminds me of small village I once lived in in Southern england.= When I see this, I remember the small village…(これを見ると、私は昔住んでいた南イングランドの小村を思い出します)
remindにはremind+人+of+事柄「人に事柄を想起させる」と、remind+人+that節「人にthat以下を想起させる」の2つの使い方がある。
The sound reminded me that it was already my bedtime.(その音を聞いて、私はもう寝る時刻になったのを思い出した)
2 This pieces of music suggests a still, moonlight night.(この曲は静かな月の晩を思わせる)

27-9. 感情を表す動詞(delight, disappoint, surpriseなど)

1 The success delighted his father.= His father was delighted at the success.(その成功で彼の父は喜んだ)
2 Her refusal disappointed him.(彼女の拒否で彼はがっかりした)
3 His letter surprized her.(彼からの手紙が来て、彼女は驚いた)

この種の動詞は「人」(上の文1〜3の目的語)を主語とした受動態表現も多い。

27-10. その他

1 A heavy snowfall delayed the train.= The train was delayed because of a heavy snowfall.(大雪のため列車が遅れた)
2 The great fire destroyed the two-thirds of the town.(大火で町の3分の2が壊滅した)
3 A little knowledge goes a long way.(ささやかな知識でも結構役に立つものだ)
4 What’s going on here?(ここでは何が起こっているのか(どうしたのか))
5 This book will give you a good sketch of Japanese manners.(この本を読むと、日本の礼儀作法についてよくわかります)

27-11. 無生物主語の訳し方

今までの例文の訳や、ところどころに示した書き換えなどからわかるように、日本語に訳す場合には無生物主語をそのまま主語にしない方がよいです。日本語では無生物主語を「手段(〜によって)」、「条件(〜すれば)」、「原因・理由(〜して、〜のために)」などの副詞(句)に言い換え、英文で動詞の目的語となっている「人」や「生物」を主語とした日本語を作ります。

An eight hours’ flight will take you to Hawaii.(あなたは飛行機に8時間乗ればハワイに着くでしょう)
The song reminded me of my home.(私はその歌で私の故郷を思い出した)
A careful observation shows that there is a wide variety of insects even in the middle of modern cities.<手段>(念入りに観察してみることによって、近代都市の真ん中にもたくさんの種類の昆虫がいることがわかります)
This way of thinking will bring you to the solution.<条件>(このような考え方をすれば、解決が得られるでしょう)
His carelessness caused the accident.(彼の不注意によってその事故が起きた)
