Getting Better It can’t get no worse(これ以上悪くはならない)

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) It’s getting very near the end(まさに終わりに近づいてきました)
Getting Better It’s getting better all the time(いつもだんだん良くなってきている)

Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey The deeper you go, the higher you fly(深く行くほど高く飛ぶことができる)

Blackbird Blackbird singing in the dead of night(夜のしじまで鳴いているクロウタドリ)

Tell Me Why But you left me sitting on my own(ひとりで座っている自分を置いて行った)
Don’t Bother Me I can’t believe that she would leave me on my own(彼女が僕を置き去りにするなんて信じられない)
It Won’t Be Long Here am I sitting all on my own(僕はひとりぼっちでここにいる)
With A Little Help From My Friends Are you sad because you’re on your own(一人になるからといって寂しいかい)
Good Morning Good Morning you’re on your own(君はひとりぼっちだ)

When I Get Home I got a whole lotta things to tell her(彼女に話したいことがいっぱいある)
Whole Lotta Love
(LED ZEPPELIN)
Wanna whole Lotta Love

ちなみにB’zのLIVE-GYM 2019はWhole Lotta NEW LOVEでした。

When I Get Home Everybody’s green(みんなが嫉妬している)

I Don’t Wanna Spoil The Party I wonder what went wrong(どうかしたんだろうか)
I’m Looking Through You You don’t look [sound] different(君は違う風に見えない[聞こえない])
Within You Without You We were talking about the love that’s gone so cold(私達は冷えきった愛に付いて話していた)
Only A Northern Song You may think the chords are going wrong(コードが間違っていると言うかもしれない)
I’m So Tired I’m going insane(気が狂ってきた)
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer he must go free(彼は解放されなければならない)

All Together Now 1, 2, 3, 4, can I have a little more(1, 2, 3, 4, もうちょっともらえるかな?)

I’m Down We’re all alone and there’s nobody else(僕らは二人きり、そばには誰もいない)

(1) 性質や状態を表す pretty, kind, beautiful, serious, sick, old, etc.
(2) 数量や程度を表す many, much, some, any, no, few, little, etc.
(3) 数や順序を示す(数詞) one, two, three, first, second, third, half, etc.
Japanese, American, Asiatic(=Asian), Parisian, etc.

He is an honest boy.
He is honest.

I believe him (to be) honest.

a problem difficult to solve(解釈が困難な問題)
a pencil about ten inches long(約10インチの鉛筆)

7-2-1-2. -thing+

There is something strange about him.(彼はどことなく変わっている)
There is nothing particular.(特別なことは何もない)

ちなみに、ビートルズのIn My Lifeの歌詞にはsomething newが出て来ます。

big green boxesかgreen big boxesか

You Can’t Do Thatの歌詞には叙述的用法で「嫉妬して」のgreenが使われています。

You Can’t Do That Everybody’s green

a wooden box (気の箱), the golden sun (金色に輝く太陽)など

a drunken man (酔っぱらい), a beaten road (踏み固められた道)など。

a mere child (単なる子供), an only son (一人息子)など。

the upper grades (上学年), the lower part (下部), one’s former wife (先妻), the latter half (後半), one’s elder brother (兄)など。
my own eyes (自分の目)

※ He is on his own.(彼は自立している)

Tell Me Why But you left me sitting on my own
Don’t Bother Me I can’t believe that she would leave me on my own
It Won’t Be Long Here am I sitting all on my own
With A Little Help From My Friends Are you sad because you’re on your own
Good Morning Good Morning And you’re on your own

be afraid (恐れて), be ashamed (恥じて), be asleep (眠って), be awake (目覚めて), be aware (知って), be alone (ひとりで)など

be content (満足して), be well (健康で)など。

I’m Down We’re all alone and there’s nobody else(僕らは二人きり、ほかには誰もいない)

I met a certain lady at the station.(駅である女性に会った)<限定用法>
He is certain to succeed this time.(彼は今度はきっと成功する)<叙述用法>
The late Dr. Makino was an authority on botany.(故牧野博士は植物学の権威だった)<限定用法>
I was late for the last train.(終電に乗り遅れた)<叙述用法>
The present king is weak in body.(現在の国王は病弱である)<限定用法>
The king was present at the ceremony.(国王はその儀式に列席した)<叙述用法>

It is impossible for me to do it.

I am unable to do it.

7-2-4. 「the+形容詞」

The old [Old people] should be treated with respect.(老人は尊敬の念をもって扱われるべきだ)

She has no eye for the beautiful.(= beauty)(彼女は美的感覚がない)

the white of an egg
the middle of the road

I don’t know for certain.(はっきりとはわからない)
I have nothing in particular to do.(特にやることは何もない)

その他、for long (長い間), for good (永久に), in short (要するに), in full (十分に), of late (最近), in general (一般に), from bad to worse (ますます悪化して)など。

数えられる名詞につくもの many, (a) few, a great many, a number of, a great [large] number of, a good many, several, not a few, quite a few
数えられない名詞につくもの much, (a) little, a great deal of, a good deal of, a great quantity of, not a little, quite a little
いずれにもつくもの a lot of, lots of, plenty of, some, any, enough

7-3-1. many, much

many, muchの用法については、次のa lot ofの項を参照。

Many people gathered in the square.(たくさんの人達が広場に集まった)
Much time was wasted.(多くの時間が無駄になった)

Many knew that he was guilty.(彼が有罪だということを知っている人はたくさんいた)
I don’t eat much for breakfast.(私は朝食はあまり食べない)

as many, like [as] so many

as many, like [as] so manyは同数の意味になる。

He made ten mistakes in as many lines.(彼は10行で10の間違いをした)
The lamps shone like so many stars.= The lamps shone as so many stars.(ランプが(それと同数の)星のように輝いていた)

7-3-2. a lot of (lots of)

※ a lot ofは英国、lots ofはアメリカで多く使われる。

He has a lot of money.<
There is a lot of money.<There is構文>
He doesn’t have much money.<
Does he have much money?<
Much [A lot of] money is needed.<

俗語のwhole lotta は a whole lot of と同じ。

When I Get Home I got a whole lotta things to tell her
Whole Lotta Love
(LED ZEPPELIN)
Wanna whole lotta love

a lot of, lots of以外で「たくさんの」の意味を示す語句を整理する。

a number of
a great [good, large] number of
a great [good] many
a great [good] deal of
a great quantity of
quantities of
a large amount of

※ ① a number ofは「いくらかの」(= some)の意味に使われることもある。

7-3-3. a few, few; a littele, little

All Together Now 1, 2, 3, 4, can I have a little more

a few, a littleは「少しある」という気持ちで、a small number [amount] ofの意味である。

I have a few friends in Los Angeles.(私はロサンゼルスに友人が2, 3人いる)

Few people are able to understand this poem.(この詩を理解できる人はほとんどいない)
There is a little hope of his recovery(彼が回復する見込みはいくらかある)

I have little knowledge of chemistry.(彼は化学のことはほとんど知らない)

I know a few of them.(彼らのうち、2, 3人は知っている)

Little is known about the island.(その島のことはほとんど知られていない)

not a few [little], quite a few [little]

not a few [little]は日本語の「少なからず」「少なくない」に似て、実質上manyと同じ
quite a few [littke]は、口語体で(a good) many, a good deal of 「かなりたくさんの」の意味になる。
Not a few people take freedom for license.(自由と放縦(ほうしょう、ほうじゅう=思うままに振る舞うこと)を取り違えている人が少なくない)
Quite a few men studied English very hard.(かなりたくさんの人が一生懸命英語を勉強した)
There is quite a little money left.(相当の金が残っている)

7-3-4. some, any

Do you feel any better today?(今日は気分はいくらかよろしいですか)
Can you make it any cheaper?(もっと安くなりませんか)

7-3-5. no

I have no brother(s).(私には兄弟がいません)

No boy could answer the question.(その質問に答えられる少年はいなかった)

Any boy couldn’t answer the question.

No boy could answer the question.となる。

He has no brothers.はHe doesn’t have any brothers. この場合、not〜any の方が〜no …

A is no B(名詞・形容詞)

He is no fool.(彼は決してばかどころではない。

He is not a fool.(彼はばかではない ー ふつうの否定文)

She showed me no small kindness.(彼女は私にたいへん親切にしてくれた)

7-3-6. enough

enoughは上例のような〜enough A to doの形のほかに、〜enough A for B(名詞・代名詞)の形になることが多い。

There was enough beer for us all.(我々みんなが飲むだけのビールがあった)

He was kind enough to show me the way.(彼は親切にも道を教えてくれた)

There was enough beer [beer enough] to go round.(みんなにいきわたるだけのビールがあった)

100 hundred
1,000 thousand
10,000 ten thousand

10時5分前=five (minutes) to [before, of(アメリカ英語)] ten

the 7:15 a.m. train = the seven fifteen a.m. train.
※ 日常生活ではpastやtoを使わず、5時15分ならfive fifteen, 4時15分前(3時45分)ならthree forty-five, 1時2分(1:02)ならone O (オウと発音) twoのように言う。

(1/3)=a [one] third, (2/3)=two thirds, (2/25)=two twenty-fifths, 2+(2/5)(+と括弧( )は本来書かないが、ここではHTMLの表示上の問題で書かざるを得ないので注意)= two and two-fifths, (131/425)=131 over 425<数の大きい分数>

7-4-3-2. 月日

4月1日=1(st) April (the first of April)(英)

April 1 (st) (April (the) first [one])(米)

7-4-4-1. hundreds of 〜「何百もの〜」

thousands of 〜「何千もの」, millions of 〜「何百万もの〜」, dozen of 〜 「何十もの」, scores of 〜 「何十もの〜」
Hundreds of birds flew over my head.(何百羽という鳥が頭上を飛んでいった)

Ten years is a long time, he thought.(10

Ten years have passed since he stopped smoking.(彼が禁煙してから10年になる)
